2016 Biomaterials Days
March 11, 2016: University of Florida: The overall goal of the University of Florida student chapter’s 2016 Biomaterials Day is to promote academic and industrial advances within the field of biomaterials, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and translational research, and provide a forum for students to share their research, network with local and national industry representatives, and learn about possible career paths and opportunities in the biomaterials field. This event will also foster student led research presentations from regional universities. In an additional effort to facilitate educational exposure, a student poster session made by graduate and undergraduate students will be held. Biomaterials Day 2016 will also promote interdisciplinary research between the medical and engineering fields and foster an environment for potential collaborations between regional universities, industry leaders, and students. March 18, 2016: University of Memphis: The University of Memphis, with assistance from University of Memphis, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, University of Kentucky, and Vanderbilt University, are hosting Memphis Biomaterials Day 2016 at our FedEx Institute of Technology on March 18, 2016. Our theme this year is "Beyond the Degree: Academia, Industry, and Entrepreneurship" and we are now accepting abstracts for Oral and Poster presentations on a rolling deadline through the website (Final deadline will be announced soon). Registration, with lunch and dinner options, will be available in late January along with more information about speakers and company sponsorship's. June 3, 2016: Texas Collaborative: Rice University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Texas at San Antonio: The overall objective of the proposed 2016 Texas Biomaterials Day is to enhance networking of members from the academic and industrial sectors and to increase student exposure to exciting biomaterials research. The proposed Biomaterials Day program will include a keynote lecture and two invited talks by leading biomaterial scientists/engineers. Oral presentations from both academic and industrial researchers will showcase ongoing research in the region and, thus, facilitate exchange of knowledge and promote scientific collaborations among institutions and industries in this region of Texas. Finally, abstracts solicited for student rapid-fire presentations and poster sessions will provide a venue for students to present their research and to network. Judges will select poster winners in two student categories (specifically, Undergraduate; Graduate); these awards will be presented to the students at the Awards Reception.
June 30, 2016: Boston Biomaterials Day: We intend to kick off an annual Biomaterials Day to both celebrate the innovation of local researchers while also providing insightful talks, workshops and demonstrations for SFB members. This event will include keynote speakers (including the current SFB president, Prof. Thomas Webster) to open and close the day, with poster sessions interspersed throughout the day. Oral presenters will be invited to run workshops on starting a startup/spinout business (in cooperation with the NU Biotech Entrepreneurs student organization), as well as an academia vs industry panel discussion. And overarching theme will be “Engineering Biomaterial Entrepreneurship”, to inspire and provide resources to SFB members and other researchers to take steps towards commercializing their research. David Williams, former editor of Biomaterials currently at Wake Forest, will be our plenary speaker.
October/November 2016: Case Western Reserve University: Case Western Reserve University, Carnegie Melon University, and the University of Michigan: The goal of this meeting is to highlight cutting edge biomaterials research in the Midwest region, carried out by research groups and students at various institutions in the area including Ohio, western Pennsylvania, Michigan, western New York, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois in the field of biomaterials. It will be collaboratively and comprehensively organized by Society For Biomaterials members at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Carnegie Mellon University and University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
October 2016: Georgia Institute of Technology: Hosted at Georgia Institute of Technology, Co-hosted by Clemson University, Bioengineering Department: The goal of the meeting is to build and contribute to the regional biomaterials network by providing talks by dynamic rising stars from invited lecturers and Georgia Tech faculty, highlighting student research, and building networking opportunities by inviting attendees from surrounding schools, industry, and government.

March 5-8, 2016: Orthopaedic Research Society, Orlando, FL: On Friday, March 4th from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm, the ORS’ new Research Interest Group on Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Bio-Imaging in Orthopaedics will present a workshop on Approaches to Collaboration: Team Science. Our invited speakers will include researchers and clinicians in biomaterials/bioengineering, bioimaging, biomechanics, biology, representing medical practice, academics, government, and industry. March 13-17, 2016: American Chemical Society, San Diego, CA: Dynamic and Tunable Biomaterials: The Engineering Cells and Their Microenvironments SIG is cosponsoring a symposium at the ACS 2016 Spring meeting in the Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering. This session will target scientists and engineers who are interested in creating versatile chemistries for tunable cell culture scaffolds. April 12-14, 2016: Design of Medical Devices Conference: Medical Device Center of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN: The SFB Devices and Materials committee is co-sponsoring a session on heart valve leaflets at the DMD Conference. The University of Minnesota Medical Devices Center (part of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine), the College of Science and Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering will host the 15th Annual Design of Medical Devices Conference, April 11, 12-14, 2016. July 29-31: American Ceramic Society, Chicago, IL: Ceramic and Glass Materials for Implants, Medical Devices and Tissue Engineering: The Innovations in Biomedical Materials 2016 Meeting is the third in a series of biomaterial meetings organized by The American Ceramic Society. The meeting will emphasize collaboration between R&D, medical practitioners, and biomedical materials manufacturers/marketers to better develop emerging technologies into marketable products. Cutting-edge research and product developments related to novel materials for orthopedic, dental, and maxillofacial applications; advanced manufacturing technologies; power sources, energy harvesting, power transmission and telemetry; as well as implantable and wearable sensors will be featured. The meeting will highlight three keynote speakers immediately followed by an expert panel session where the audience can interact with renowned experts in the biomedical field. In addition, a robust technical program consisting of six tracks will provide a forum for scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and industrial researchers to discuss recent advances in the field of biomedical materials is planned. December 11-14: TERMIS Americas, San Diego, CA: As part of an initiative to increase interactions between the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) and Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), SFB is sponsoring a Pre-Conference Workshop on "Biomaterial Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering" onDecember 11, 2016. This workshop will be held the day before the TERMIS - North America meeting in San Diego and will be a full-day workshop divided into two sessions that will focus on the following topics that will be of particular interest to both the SFB and TERMIS audiences.
