Code of Ethics

Code of Ethics for the SOCIETY FOR BIOMATERIALS 

The collective activities of biomaterials scientists (i.e., those involved in research, development of and clinical implementation of medical products using biomaterials), as represented by the members of the Society For Biomaterials (SFB), comprise a multidisciplinary and learned profession that has a direct and vital impact on public health.  This role carries immense ethical responsibility.  Stakeholders include (but are not limited to) patients and the public‐at‐large, scientists, engineers, clinicians, lawyers, insurers, hospitals, universities, regulators, educators, and professional societies (including SFB), and foundations, etc.  Involved in a field dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare, those practicing biomaterials science are obligated to adhere to the highest principles of ethical conduct, honesty, integrity, fairness, and equity.

Thus, each biomaterials scientist shall:

  • Act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the profession.
  • Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public in the performance of their professional duties.
  • Hold paramount a responsibility to all stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, FDA, developers and manufacturers, and payors.
  • Maintain a commitment to practice biomaterials research, development, commercialization, and clinical implementation, following the highest standards of professional integrity at all times.
  • Follow the highest standards of collaboration, authorship, peer‐review, education, and mentoring.
  • Maintain the highest standards for responsible conduct of research and development.
  • Adhere to the need for evidence‐based claims of biomaterials and medical device outcomes.
  • Respect all forms of intellectual property.
  • Avoid financial and other conflicts of interest related to the profession.
